The Full Story

The Margery Magill Memorial Scholarship was established by Jeff and Bonnie Magill in loving memory of their daughter, Margery Magill — a vibrant and compassionate young woman whose life was tragically cut short in August 2019. In honor of her legacy, this annual scholarship supports youth involved in 4-H and the Future Farmers of America (FFA), two organizations that helped shape Margery into the leader, mentor, and advocate that she became. The scholarship also supports seniors from the Marysville Charter Academy of the Arts (MCAA), her high school in Yuba County, and delivers scholarships to high school seniors involved in the sport of horse polo.

A Life of Service and Passion

Margery was a lifelong resident of Sutter County, where she grew up immersed in agriculture, the arts, and community service. She was a proud member of the Barry 4-H and later the Marysville FFA, earning the prestigious American FFA Degree, the highest honor awarded by the organization. Margery also attended the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts, (MCAA) further nurturing her creative spirit.

Her passion for learning and global impact led her to UC Davis, where she completed her undergraduate studies in International Agricultural Development. She later earned a master’s degree in International Relations from the Winchester University in London.
Margery’s curiosity about the world and desire to make it better were matched only by her kindness and dedication to others.

Remembering Margery

In August of 2019, at the age of 27, Margery’s life was tragically taken in a random act of violence while walking a dog near her home in Washington, D.C. Margery’s death sent shockwaves through the communities she touched — from her hometown in California to her friends and colleagues across the globe. In the days following her passing, family and friends came together to honor her memory through something meaningful and lasting. Donations began pouring in, and the idea for a scholarship was born.

A Legacy That Lives On

The Margery Magill Memorial Scholarship continues her legacy by providing financial support to students involved in 4-H and FFA — the same programs that gave Margery her start, to high school seniors from MCAA— her high school and from the youth horse polo community. Each year, the scholarship helps young people pursue higher education and leadership opportunities, encouraging them to follow in Margery’s footsteps: to lead with heart, serve with purpose, and never stop learning. Through this scholarship, Margery’s light continues to shine, inspiring the next generation of change makers in agriculture, education, and beyond.
